Making a Thick NI Massive Trance Lead Synth

Posted on 7th February, by OhmLab in Tutorials for Massive, Video. 1 Comment

A quick and easy to follow video tutorial sharing how to design your own thick and dynamic NI Massive trance lead synth!

Signature Sound!

This NI Massive lead trance synth is a truly iconic signature sound for the genre!

This NI Massive trance lead starts off with a Square wave loaded into OSC1. Then a Sawtooth wave is loaded into OSC2, with the pitch dropped one octave. Finally, another Sawtooth wave is loaded into OSC3, with the pitch raised one octave. On the Voicing tab, the total number of voices is increased to four. This allows the Pitch Cutoff feature to be used to spread the voices out and detune the synth, which introduces phasing. This is where the bulk of the thickness comes from and there is a certain depth and width that comes along with it.

To better shape the delivery of this NI Massive trance lead, the Main Amp Envelope is set up with a short Decay to shorten the length of the notes. Our sound is then routed through a Lowpass4 filter, which has been loaded into the Filter1 panel. A secondary Modulation Envelope is set up with a short decay and assigned to control the Cutoff parameter of the Lowpass4 filter. This adds movement to the delivery and makes the sound more interesting.

The EQ tab is activated and used to accentuate the high end of this NI Massive trance lead just a bit, making it brighter. A Synced Delay effect is added to extend the sound and add even more depth. And a small amount of Reverb provides this lead with more room to move around in. As a finishing touch, you can assign a Macro control to the Attack Volume knob of the secondary modulation envelope that was assigned to control the cutoff of the filter. With this Macro control in place, you can now easily manipulate the cutoff of Lowpass4 filter and change the entire sound with a twist of a knob.

The cool tip here, is that i’ve just learned we could make a Cut Off effect with the “Level” knob. Very interesting
